The EMPACT final conference was held between June 26th – 28th, 2024at the Cyprus University of Technology at Lemesos, as part of the Fifth International Conference on Semiotics of Culture and Visual Communication The Cyprus Semiotics Circle and the Semiotics and Visual Communication Research Lab joined forces with the EMPACT project to investigate key themes during these 3 days: “Semiotics of Otherness”, “Nature as the Other: Empathy, Arts & Sustainability”.
The conference was rich in content, having speakers and attendees scholars, researchers and practitioners who share a common interest in Semiotics, Culture and Visual Communication, Philosophy and Environmental Studies from 15 countries (Australia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Dubai, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Uruguay, United Kingdom and others). The National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts “KR. Sarafov” was represented at the conference by EMPACT team member Dr. Yana Dzharova-Karakoleva. There were over 68 presentations on diverse themes, such as applied art, industrial design, visual arts, identity, literature, philosophy, environment, ecodesign, biosemiotics, tourism and many other. The conference investigated the subject of Semiotics, Culture and Visual Communication in the widest context, exploring connections, tensions and contradictions. During the event, researchers, scholars and practitioners discussed which culture and visual communication can be analyzed and articulated in the context of semiotics.
EMPACT consortium partners also held final meetings to wrap up the effectively delivered results of the 2-years project’s implementation, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Commission.
